How Power is Generated from Fuel Cells

Fuel cell powerpack is powered by electricity generated in the stack using hydrogen and oxygen. As shown in the diagram, the stack is composed of numerous cells made up of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and two electrodes, which generate ions and electrons through hydrogen reaction and oxygen reaction.
Oxygen can be obtained from the atmosphere, so as long as hydrogen is supplied, electricity can be generated.
Also, because hydrogen is first compressed to a high pressure before being stored in the high-pressure hydrogen tank, it can power fuel cell for a long time.
Doosan has been accumulating know-how in the materials and systems relating to phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) since 50 years ago and polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) since 30 years. It is based on such experience that Doosan is developing mobile PEMFC powerpack.

How Powerpack Fuel Cell Works

Supply hydrogen

From the refueled hydrogen tank, hydrogen is supplied to the tube through the regulator.

Generate electricity

Energy is generated within the fuel cell stack.

Exhaust air

Air is vented out through the fan.

Supply power

Electricity generated in the stack supplies power to the drone.

Drone flies as motor starts running.

  • Safe energy, Hydrogen

    Hydrogen is industrial gas that has been used in vast quantities and safely stored in industrial sites for a long period of time.
    The lightest element on the Earth, hydrogen evaporates the moment it is leaked, and when it leaks at 700 bar pressure, it just burns with a quiet flame instead of exploding.
    Therefore concerns over hydrogen explosion has been minimizing these days.
    On the contrary, the likelihood of gasoline/hybrid engine explosion increases when the temperature rises above 0℃ (104 °F), hence hydrogen is safer for long flights.

    When hydrogen is combined with air in the atmosphere, water is formed, which makes hydrogen pollution-free gas that barely creates pollutants.
