Hydrogen, a natural element, is the new energy source for drones
Fuel cell powerpack is powered by electricity generated in the stack using hydrogen and oxygen. As shown in the diagram, the stack is composed of numerous cells made up of polymer electrolyte membrane (PEM) and two electrodes, which generate ions and electrons through hydrogen reaction and oxygen reaction.
Oxygen can be obtained from the atmosphere, so as long as hydrogen is supplied, electricity can be generated.
Also, because hydrogen is first compressed to a high pressure before being stored in the high-pressure hydrogen tank, it can power fuel cell for a long time.
Doosan has been accumulating know-how in the materials and systems relating to phosphoric acid fuel cell (PAFC) since 50 years ago and polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) since 30 years. It is based on such experience that Doosan is developing mobile PEMFC powerpack.
How Powerpack Fuel Cell Works
From the refueled hydrogen tank, hydrogen is supplied to the tube through the regulator.
Energy is generated within the fuel cell stack.
Air is vented out through the fan.
Electricity generated in the stack supplies power to the drone.
Run the motor
Drone flies as motor starts running.
Safer and more eco-friendly drone flight
Safe energy, Hydrogen
Hydrogen is industrial gas that has been used in vast quantities and safely stored in industrial sites for a long period of time.
The lightest element on the Earth, hydrogen evaporates the moment it is leaked, and when it leaks at 700 bar pressure, it just burns with a quiet flame instead of exploding.
Therefore concerns over hydrogen explosion has been minimizing these days.
On the contrary, the likelihood of gasoline/hybrid engine explosion increases when the temperature rises above 0℃ (104 °F), hence hydrogen is safer for long flights.
Renewable energy, Hydrogen
When hydrogen is combined with air in the atmosphere, water is formed, which makes hydrogen pollution-free gas that barely creates pollutants.
Effort to reduce fine dust, dangers of nuclear power and greenhouse gas around the world, also increases necessity of the use of renewable energy.
Therefore environmentally-friendly energy, hydrogen that is abundant, inexpensive, and safe, is gaining spotlight as the most promising alternative energy.

Wide-spread energy, Hydrogen
Countries that are heavily dependent on imported energy, such as China, US, Japan, and Germany, are all studying hydrogen and trying to build hydrogen infrastructure.
Moreover, some countries are even studying the possibility of hydrogen as a substitute for natural gas used in the industrial sector.
Even in countries with abundant natural gas reserves, if they are frequently affected by earthquakes or typhoons, hydrogen has replaced wind and solar energy.
